Dyddiau Du Press - Open Call for Submissions

DAC Member Joshua Jones has started Dyddiau Du Press alongside fellow poet and friend Ginny Darke. Dyddiau Du is Welsh for 'dark days'. We hope one day to be able to publish in print (zines, pamphlets, books, ephemera) but for now we are starting up as an online journal on Substack.


Dyddiau Du currently have an open call for their first issue, with the deadline Friday May 10th. Submissions are open to prose, essays, poetry, art writing & visual art from Welsh/Wales-based writers and artists, or anyone who otherwise has a connection to Wales. We're of course encouraging of submissions by D/deaf, Neurodivergent, and Disabled artists & writers.

What are we looking for?

  • Dyddiau Du Press is a working-class, queer press. We are interested in innovative writing, art and interdisciplinary work from Welsh & Wales-related artists & writers. We won’t read or tolerate hate speech or AI.

  • We accept submissions for prose pieces and essays, art and poetry. We’re especially interested in arts writing and reviews, as there aren’t many places to publish arts or exhibition reviews in Wales. Exhibitions must be in Wales for them to be reviewed & published in Dyddiau Du Press.

  • Writers & Artists considering submitting work to us must have a connection with Wales.

  • We especially encourage submissions from anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+, Disabled, working-class/from a lower-economic background, asylum seekers & refugees, as well as writers and artists from the Global Majority.

  • Please email us about translations & bilingual/Wenglish works.

  • Simultaneous submissions are fine, but let us know if your work gets accepted elsewhere. We only accept previously unpublished work.

  • Please send your work to us only once during each reading window. If you get published, please wait three issues before submitting to us again.

  • Please only submit work through the Google Form.


Short prose & texts & essays


  • 1600 words maximum (any word count up to that is fine)

  • Send as a Word doc or PDF in a sans serif font, size 12, single-spaced.

  • Send one piece of writing per submission


Art reviews & art writing

  • 600 words maximum

  • Send as a Word doc or PDF in a sans serif font, size 12, single-spaced.

  • Send one piece of writing per submission


Poetry

  • Send us up 1-3 poems.

  • Poems should be submitted as a Word Doc or PDF. If specific formatting is crucial to your work, please send your poems as a PDF or JPEG.

  • Sans serif font, size 12, single-spaced.

  • If your writing is accompanied with visuals/images then please let us know in your submission.


Art

  • Send up to three works/images as JPEGs (minimum 300dpi)

  • along with a bit of writing (up to 200 words) that contextualises your work.
