Artist Spotlight: Gavin Clifton

DAC Member Gavin Clifton, known professionally as The Disabled Writer, is a Children's

Author, Inspirational Speaker, Disability Advocate, and Lyricist based in South Wales.



Gavin Clifton writes inclusive, unfiltered and accessible children's stories that centre disabled characters, placing them at the heart of meaningful and impactful narratives. His books give children permission to be themselves and to ask honest questions about disability, acceptance and difference.



His published titles include the Amazon bestselling Max and the Magic Wish, Paddy the Polar Bear Teddy, and Anya and the Enchanted Wheelchair. Through these stories, Gavin highlights the importance of representation while encouraging empathy, curiosity and understanding in young readers.



As an inspirational speaker, Gavin delivers talks in schools, organisations, conferences and

public settings across the UK. By demonstrating how AAC (Augmentative and Alternative

Communication) works in real life, he helps both children and adults understand disability,

speech differences and alternative communication methods in a direct, engaging and

memorable way. His talks explore themes of inclusion, resilience, identity and acceptance,

leaving audiences with fresh perspectives and lasting impact.


Gavin regularly collaborates with schools, disability organisations and community projects,

and is a proud ambassador for Cerebral Palsy Cymru. He is passionate about making inclusion something that is experienced, not just discussed.



Alongside his writing and advocacy, Gavin is an accomplished lyricist. He has co-written songs for The Korgis, Peter Karrie (Phantom of the Opera), and Kirsten Orsborn. He is also the co-founder of The Word Groove Collective, a pioneering creative initiative bringing together diverse artists and combining traditional songwriting with assistive technology such as Eyegaze and switch devices to create truly unique music.



Across storytelling, speaking and songwriting, Gavin's mission remains the same: to show what disabled people can achieve when given space, access and the opportunity to be heard.
