A new episode of Your Art, Unlocked, hosted by DAC member Steph Roberts.

Steph visits Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery in Merthyr Tydfil to unlock an unusual series of visual sound works by Megan Watts Hughes, a Victorian singer and scientist from Merthyr Tydfil. Megan’s ‘Voice Figures’ were made in the nineteenth century using glass plates, powders and coloured pastes, and a secret ingredient: the human voice.

The podcast includes an interview with environmental sound artist Cheryl Beer, who describes how her own practice has evolved with her own hearing loss, and how she repurposes hearing aid technologies to explore sound and fragile ecologies.

Also interviewed are Rob Mullender Ross who explains the science behind Megan Watts Hughes' 'Voice Figures; and Michelle Lewis, Curatorial Officer at Cyfarthfa Castle who explains how the works entered the collection, and the efforts they are making to stabilise the works for display.
